The key to success and prosperity in life lies in working smart, not hard.

We all have limited time and resources, but our wants and needs are unlimited. The truth is, no one can achieve everything in life without having to make sacrifices in some areas. We must let go of some wants.

With today’s challenging economic conditions, it’s very easy to lose focus on life and fall behind in the process. Here are a few tips on things that we could be doing differently and a few things we need to break free from to progress in life.

We all live our lives differently and have different priorities. We also have different stories to tell. Some of us might have finished school, gotten married, found a good job and are now living happily, while some others might be struggling to keep themselves afloat. Life does not always run in a straight line. It’s full of obstacles, ups and downs and surprises. It’s ok if we are not doing as well as others.

No matter how well or how poorly you are doing right now, there are always ways that you can improve your life.

There are a few easy things that you could do differently to turn your life around and make it a lot better. Little things can add up and go a long way.

There are also things that we do in our lives, to ourselves or in our jobs, that tend to damage our lives, careers and people around us. Many people don’t even realize the repercussions of their actions.

I have learned through my own life experience and in observing my friends who I have helped along the way. Here is a list of things that you should avoid doing, to make your life a lot easier.

1. Work smart not hard

blogger-336371_1280Balancing your life and work is very important if we want to be productive. Many people spend too much time at work, trying to build their career and get ahead in life. However, taking care of family, spending time on things that you like, are equally important. You need to do things for your own health and recreation, as well.

It is proven that by a certain point in our day, productivity goes down if we don’t take a break. The same applies to our whole lives – we can’t just work and work indefinitely. Taking breaks allows us to return to work with greater productivity and enthusiasm.

You also don’t need to have huge opportunities and prospects. Sometimes a good idea goes a long way. You may think that a small business owner has to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to compete with a multimillion dollar company because they have less people and resources. It’s not true; there are many examples where a small startup company accomplished bigger things than a larger competitor.

Take Instagram for example.  They were a small 13 employee company, which Facebook bought for a billion dollars on April 9, 2012. Three hundred  million dollars were given in cash, and the rest in Facebook stock. (Business Insider)

2. Do not compare yourself to others

We get so caught up following what others are doing. Having many likes on your Facebook profile picture or having money in the bank do not make you a better person. What happens, is that these things create a need in us to feel important, which can ruin our day and our lives.

You can spend your whole life worrying about what others have, that you don’t have, but it won’t get you anywhere.

3. Don’t let your past influence your present

Let go of your past, it’s gone. There is nothing you can do right now to change your past. We cannot even change something that happened five minutes ago. But what we can do is learn from our experiences and move on. Don’t stress too much about what you could have done differently, or how your life would have been different if you did something differently.

Don’t let yourself be controlled by regrets of the past.

If someone has treated you badly, you need to forgive them because forgiveness brings happiness. Remember, you don’t forgive people because you’re weak; you forgive them because you’re strong.

4. Avoid the wrong crowd

Choosing the wrong crowd to hang out with can ruin your life. They influence you to adopt bad habits, make you spend money and waste your time in doing the wrong things.

The right kind of people will give you the right advice, show you the right path and steer you away from poor choices. You will always remember people who helped you and the little moment that you shared together, if you surround yourself with the right kind of people. Look for people who have more experience and knowledge in life than you.

5. Avoid wasting time

couch potatoWe tend to waste time on less important things and waste our energy. The trick is to manage your time more efficiently.

Schedule time every day and plan your tasks, it’s the only way to utilize your time more efficiently. We ruin our lives by living in an imbalanced way. Recognize the things that are more important to you and get them done first.

We watch too much TV and eat junk food, instead of getting out and about, or doing something productive. Even something small, like reading a book or socializing with your family, could be much more productive than watching TV and consuming some unhealthy junk food and drinks.

6. Avoid spending money on unnecessary things

Budget your money and avoid impulsive financial decisions. Buy things that you absolutely need and budget your money. You may be wasting money to feed your bad habits like drinking, smoking, going to bars or gambling. Watch your spending and cut down on things that are draining your paycheck.

One way to stop wasting money is to shop smart. Make a list of things you really need before you go grocery shopping and also check your refrigerator for things that you could eat, and things that you have bought but haven’t used. Avoid things like buying snacks from gas stations, ordering food or eating out instead of cooking. You need to save more and be prepared for the unexpected surprises in life.

7. Avoid an unhealthy lifestyle

On top of that, you need to go to bed early, that’s very important. Start your day with a healthy nutritious breakfast,  get exercise every day, and avoid things that may damage your health.

Healthy living is within your reach, and you can start living healthy at this very moment. Check with your doctor before you start any workout routine. Also, make appointments with your doctor and get health checks regularly.

Conclusion

It does not matter if you haven’t achieved everything you wanted in life. You may not be married by the time you are 30 or become the president of a company, but as long as you are alive, it is important that you keep moving. Keep finding new things around you that you find inspiring. Never stop learning and never stop living your life to the fullest.
