The best way to keep your brain sharp, improve your memory and improve your mental state is to learn something new every day. You could learn anything from a new musical instrument, language, game,  famous quotes, poetry or even stories. Also, try to read something every day. Reading has many benefits. Reading articles, books or newspapers will keep you informed, improve your vocabulary and word stock.

2. Get out in the nature

I am sure if you were walking in nature right now, you would be feeling a lot better. Studies show that connecting with nature improves our sense of wellbeing. A simple walk in the park or caring for your plants could improve your mood and take away stress.

3. Get physical

Move your body, any way you can. We all know that regular exercise improves us physically and mentally, but how many of us actually exercise regularly? Very few people exercise regularly and stay with their physical routine. Regular physical exercises make us physically healthier, smarter, improve sleep, and make us feel better about ourselves.

According to Leo Widrich, when you start exercising, your brain recognizes this as a moment of physical stress. It releases a protein called BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). This BDNF has a protective and also reparative element to your memory neurons and acts as a reset switch. That’s why we often feel so at ease and things are clear after exercising and even happy.

4. Socialize

Harvard happiness expert Daniel Gilbert  identified social interactions as one of the biggest happiness factors in our lives. Socializing and interacting with people face to face, not just through smart phones, will improve our brains. Sharing our ideas, goals, and feelings also help us to be happier. Not feeling socially connected can make us feel depressed and it could lead to physical problems.

“We are happy when we have family, we are happy when we have friends and almost all the other things we think make us happy are actually just ways of getting more family and friends.” – Daniel Gilbert

5. Express your gratitude

Make sure to show your gratitude to others. Focus on appreciation for your loved ones. It can improve your relationship, make you happier, make you a better person, and also improve the lives of others around you.

6. Sleep well

Breus, (Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist) says that the ideal time to go to bed is between 10 P.M to midnight. Going to bed early is something that we can easily control, and it’s necessary for us in order to get enough good night’s sleep. Lack of sleep is more likely to make you tired and get you sick more easily. It can also affect your decision making, and make it harder for you to be happy.

7.  Help others

When you help others, it builds a relationship between you and the people that you help. Helping others could be sharing kind words, offering advice, or if possible helping them to improve their lives.

“No one can live happily who has regard for himself alone and transforms everything into a question of his own utility.” (Seneca)

8. Smile more often

Smiling can improve your immune system, help you cope with stress, reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, and help you live longer. Smiling also helps you connect with people around you and reduce stress in them too. It’s amazing how a facial gesture as simple as smiling can make you look attractive and happier instantly.

9. Be optimistic

I am sure you’ve heard this very old saying, “every cloud has a silver lining” which means no matter how bad things look now, they will always get better. People who stay positive tend to do better in all aspects of life. They are also healthier and tend to live longer.

“There should be laughter after pain, there should be sunshine after rain, these things have always been the same, so why worry now. “ – Dire Straits
