“Environmental studies students learn that the various fields of science, technology, and human relations are interrelated on many levels. Decisions made in one field are invariably felt in another.” – Pursuing a Degree in Environmental Studies: Where Will It Lead? | EnviroEducation.com

windmills-705282_1280Environmental study is an interdisciplinary academic field that combines many other related fields. it  was established in the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University in the 1950s. Back then, many people thought of this field as an unimportant or unnecessary field of study or engineering that had no prospects in the future.

Over the past few years, more and more Americans have been finding the need for sustainable growth of civilization, and therefore there are more people getting involved in this field of study. People are trying to find solutions for sustainable growth, fight climate change, global warming, fight pollution and find technologies that support sustainability.

“For the second year in a row, a leading magazine has named environmental studies a “hot” college major and singled out UW-Madison for its undergraduate programs in this growing field.” – Growth field: Environmental studies a “college major with a future” – Nelson Institute | News

Steven Cohen, Executive Director, of Columbia University’s Earth Institute, wrote in a blog titled The Growing Field of Sustainability Studies that “One of the most encouraging trends I’ve seen in recent years has been the growth of environmental studies programs in many American universities. For past decade, I’ve directed an MPA (Master of Public Administration) Program in Environmental Science and Policy at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and Earth Institute. Today, over 500 graduates of that program are working as environmental professionals all over the world. About a year and a half ago, the Earth Institute partnered with Columbia’s School of Continuing Education and launched a MS (Master of Science) program in Sustainability Management. That program now enrolls over 250 students butterfly-757960_1280and has already graduated over 30 students.”

Sustainability is the growing trend in every industry today; emphasis is given on operating sustainable businesses. Developing and funding products and services in sustainable way is becoming a major focus. We are beginning to see how we are able to make sustainable progress, and so, more and more students are entering into environmental studies to fill the jobs and demands of the future.

Environmental jobs on the rise

As our nation is becoming more environmentally conscious, the need for environmental professionals and environmental science jobs are also increasing. As pointed out by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a career in the environmental field is becoming far more robust in the job market than graduates of many other disciplines.

Today, environmental scientists and graduates in the environmental study major can find jobs in a variety of different industries. Some of the private, government and nonprofit organizations, including education, research, consulting, and technical industries are seeking environmental professionals.

“I have been an environmental professional for over 40 years.  Yes, you read that right – 40 years.  So what does an old guy know?  Well, I know what I have seen and experienced in those many years – CHANGE! After Change after Change!”  – Dr. Wayne Dorband
