One of the biggest advantages of working with and being around people who have more experience than you is getting valuable life advice from them. People who have become successful in their careers, and also in all other aspects of their lives, have grown and learned from their own mistakes. People also learn from other people’s mistakes, and can apply that insight to make their own lives better. Here are 20 priceless words of life advice from experts and from people who have already gone through life gathering knowledge and experience, and now have passed them down to us to learn.
1. Learn something new every day
To keep your brain sharp and improve your memory function, learn something new every day. You could start taking lessons on a musical instrument, learn a new language, memorize poetry, quotes, philosophy, and anything you want that would intrigue your brain.
2. Ask questions
I don’t know where this originated from but maybe it’s a quote from someone famous, which my school teacher always told us, “If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.” You never get anything if you don’t ask for it. It goes for anything in life. To get something, you have to ask for it.
3.Slow down.
I once heard a story about a young waitress, who was overwhelmed with orders. She was trying to figure out why she was always having trouble keeping up with orders, and always falling behind, while the more experienced ones were breezed through theirs. One of the more experienced waitresses took her aside and gave her this valuable advice “slow down.” You need to slow down, look ahead of you, and take longer steps. Longer steps will cover more ground in less time, looking ahead will allow you to plan ahead, and move faster.
4. Explore the world
There are many things to see and experience in this world. There is always something you will find interesting, so always make good use of any opportunity to explore the world. Interesting places could be right around the block or a few hundred miles away.
5. Get fit
Health is wealth. The old saying is true. Fitness is a key to happiness and prosperity. Start physical activities such as walking, jogging, playing games and sports that will keep you physically and mentally fit. The more you improve your fitness level, the happier you will be in life.
6. Avoid multi-tasking
Stay focused on one task at a time. Switching back and forth between chores has become a harmful practice today which reduces productivity. On top of that, we are becoming more and more reliant on modern devices such as our smart phone and computer that encourage multi-tasking, and distract us from our goals. Multi-tasking is less efficient and make us more prone to errors and stress. Focus on one task at a time. Switch off your electronic devices that distract you, at least for some time, during your tasks.
7. Focus on the present
Instead of thinking about the past and worrying about the future, live fully in the present. Living in the present means living where actions are happening, where life is taking place. The past is already gone, and you cannot change anything. You can only learn from your past experiences and move forward. Remember the old saying,” tomorrow never comes”. Tomorrow is always waiting to come around the corner, the time to live is now. When you live in the present, you can really be happy.
8. Smile
Smiling improves the way you look while improving your bodily functions. There are many reasons to smile, but the health benefits of smiling will give you reasons enough to smile. When you smile, people connect with you more easily and help you to stay positive. Smiling is contagious, so people around you will also become positive. The health benefits of smiling include lower blood pressure and a stronger immune system. Smiling also releases “Endorphins”,a natural pain killer.
9. Be positive
Being positive has a magical effect on our lives and careers. We should learn to be more positive, because staying positive helps us all to look at the brighter side of things. It motivates us to move forward, do our thing, and get the best possible results we can achieve. Avoid negativity and negative influences at all costs. Instead, surround yourself with positive minded people, who would recharge and motivate you and give you strength to move forward.
10. Help others
Helping others will make you happier and give you strength. When you give to others, you will also get something back in return. Maybe not immediately, or not from the same person or in the same form, but when you are generous, others will notice it too. Helping others will often help you to fit into a group, make new friends, and also help you connect with others more easily. Helping also releases endorphins. Always try to stand beside those who need help.
11. Get out more
This is similar to exploring the world. Today, we don’t get all the outdoor exposure that we should. Most of us wake up and go to office, come home, watch TV, or get on the computer and go to sleep. There is no interaction with the outside world, other than while you are on the road. Take some time off from your busy day to connect with nature, take a walk in the park, or spend some time outside, away from your electronic devices. It will help you to improve your health, boost your mental condition, increase your blood circulation, and help you to stay happier. Go out and get some fresh air, get some exercise, and meet some new people along the way.
12. Socialize
Have you been working too hard and neglecting your friends and family? To live a balanced life, you must take some time out and socialize with your friends and family. Being a social being, we benefit greatly from direct, face to face, social interaction, instead of interacting over the phone or on the social media platforms. It improves your health, fitness level, and improves your brain power. If you have been feeling stressed out, socializing with your old friends, family, and the people that you really trust, will also help you to release stress.
14. Sleep right
Getting a good night’s sleep is probably the most important function for fitness and health. You cannot function well without a good night’s sleep. Sleeping well also means going to bed early, getting good quality sleep, and waking up early in the morning.
15. Focus on your goals
Setting goals and achieving them will keep you motivated and improve your confidence level. Focus is what gets you to your goal. It keeps you on track and channels out distractions. Just like an archer, you need focus and achieve a higher level of concentration to hit the bull’s eye.
16. Don’t burn bridges
Make new friends, but don’t forget your old friends. Always try to keep old friendships and relationships alive. It goes for all your life relationships, whether it’s your personal, professional or your social life.
17. Eat a balanced diet
Eating the right kind of food is one of the key elements of living a healthy balanced life. Food can help you stay healthy, and keep you away from diseases. It will also keep you energetic, strong, and looking and feeling younger.
18. Avoid junk food
Junk food has a negative effect on our health. We don’t get all the nutrients we need for our daily activities from junk food. For example, you will not get all the vitamins and minerals that you need every day by eating a hot dog. To the contrary, junk food might clog up your arteries and give you heart diseases and other problems.
19. Limit drugs and alcohol
Drugs and alcohol can kill you physically and emotionally. Alcohol is the most commonly abused drug in the United States, which is often thought to be less harmful. Abusing alcohol can lead to your ruin. Other prescription and street drug addictions can be hazardous to your health, your job, your social life, and not to mention your pocket.
20. Do what you love
Most of us work just to make a living and put bread on the table. But if you love what you do, your life becomes so much more enjoyable. You might not always like your job, or your job might not be easy, however, you will benefit if you put your whole heart into it, and do the best you can. If you save up enough money, you will be able to do what you love, later on in your life. So, if you love what you do, you will be able to do what you love, and this is one of the major keys to a happier balanced life.
