Home-based fish farming can ensure high quality organic food for your family right from your home. You could also take it a step further and turn it into a profitable home based business. It would not only feed your family and your community, but would also make some extra cash.
Ever thought about raising fish at home for profit? You could use your backyard pond, basement or anywhere in your house to setup a mini fish farm.
Fish farming can be a lucrative business that does not require a lot of resources and anyone can do. All you need is some extra space, time, and some minimal inputs to get started. The best part is, it can be done at any scale that suits your requirement or availability of resources.
Why Fish Farming?
Fish has become more popular as a source of protein today than ever before. On average, people eat about 42 pounds of fish a year today. However, most of the fish that come into the market today is from aquaculture. Our wild fish stocks are already depleted and our oceans are overfished, so there is no choice but to raise fish to fill in the gap.
The demand for fish raised in organic farms is going to be even greater because of the freshness, the taste, and the fact that they are rebased in a natural environment, devoid of chemicals and unnatural elements.
When you raise your fish with organic food and in natural environment, you can expect to sell your fish to your health conscious neighbors or friends without any problems. You could even take it a step further and sell it in your local farmers’ market, restaurants, or to your neighbors from your home based farm.
How To Get Started
To get started, you’d need to dig a pond in your backyard or containers for keeping your fish, if you wish to start indoor fish farming. A backyard pond is suitable for a wide variety of fish, including tilapia, catfish, trout, koi, and so on.
A vertical veggie and fish farm in a barrel could be suitable for small yards, if you don’t have enough space for a backyard pond. You could easily build a vertical aquaponic system to grow vegetables and raise fish at the same time. All you need is a couple of barrels, some PVC pipes and some hand tools to build it.
The Future of Fish Farming
The future of clean and sustainable fish farming might be indoors. Indoor fish farming has many advantages. There is less chances of pathogens or predator attacks from outside. You are also able to control indoor climate and raise fish all year long.
Indoor fish farming doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming. It doesn’t impact the environment and you are able to start at any scale, in tubs, indoor pools, or aquariums. Your fish will grow on its own, with very little input from you. You need to create a natural ecological system in your tank or fish pond, and it will run on autopilot, once you have given the initial inputs for it.
The Choice Is Yours!
When you have gained enough experience and learned about the business, you could grow in scale. You could even farm lands to dig bigger ponds and raise fish commercially. However, it’s important that you learn more about fish farming and the business side of a commercial fishery before you start. There is nothing really complicated about starting a home-based fish farm, indoors or outdoors.

Hi,
My name is “SAM” I wish to start a medium size commercial
commercial fish farm for my living. I am retired and
having my wife to support me for this venture. I have
the following questions, prior to start the farm:
a. Which State is aqua-friendly, in terns of climate,
less expensive land availability and infrastructure
in US.
b. What issues usually faces by fish farmers and
How can be solved these problems
c. U S government provides incentives for fish
farmers, if how to get and marketing?

Sam,
Great questions. There are no tax incentives at a federal level for fish farming. The best locations are close to markets where your product is easily sold. Fish farmers face many issues. To best help you with your interests, please get in touch with me personally. You can set up a call with me on my scheduling tool at http://www.talkwithwayne.com. I will also be making you a member of our Aquaculture education groups. Best wishes.

I wish to start a fresh water fish farming,
which state of US is best for fish farming,
I like live in warmer climate.
How much will be costing to furnish
for an income of $5000.00 per month.
What land size, expenditure etc.
Wayne and all,
My wife and I are interested in aquaponics. We are retired, have enough funds to get started, but lack information. We have talked to a wholesaler about tilapia, but he recommended blue gill. (during that conversation, I found out that he was out of tilapia for that season, but had blue gill…hmmmm.)
This morning on nation public radio, I heard a news story about a guy near New York City that was raising shrimp indoors in a climate controlled environment and was taking to market 300 pound of shrimp and selling them for $25/pound. He and three helper we doing this. Does that sound realistic?
At present, we would like to be able to supply our own needs with a little extra. Getting larger in the future would be nice, but we need to take that first baby step.
How do we join your team?
ps: if you don’t post this, that would be okay
Kelly

My name is Peter Gitau, a cordinatot of a proposed Community Trout Fish farming Project in Nyeri County in Kenya. The project site is in Gura River emanating from Aberdares Forest. Research carried out indicates the area is very suitable for trout fish farming in terms of the required conditions for the project. Kenya Forest Service has allocated the community a 3 Acre land for the project and a license to establish the project integrated with sport fishing for ecotourim activities. The current challenge is lack of funding to proceed. How can you assist to get funding for the project?
Hello, I live in NY state, and have been dreaming about the possibilities of aquaphonics for a while now. I’m sure, there’s so much I don’t know. I’m currently working on a 1000 gallon rectangle tank in my garage. The idea is to experiment on a small scale, the possibility of a small home based business. I’m currently at the filtration stage, at which I will experiment in low cost bio filtration. I will then toy around with temperature control using an aquastat and a heating unit. I’m currently focused on fish, but would eventually explore all farming opportunities, including shellfish.
I have a 65*65foot farmpond. I want to do fish farming tell me which types of fish suitable for me.and their food.
