3 veggies & herbs to grow in your backyard garden in fall

Are you ready to grow your own herbs and veggies? You have a wide variety of cool weather plants to choose from. However, your choices may vary depending on where you live and your growing zone. You can start growing some crops right now and through the winter. Below are 5 healthy, cool temperature loving plants that you can start off with.

Parsley is a fast growing plant that can sprout directly from seeds during late summer or fall seasons. It would take about 20-30 days for parsley to mature from seeds. You could choose to prepare a bed in your yard and spread seeds on it, or grow indoors in containers. Just make sure it gets enough sunlight and water.

2. Kale

Kale is another fast growing herb that you can sow directly outdoors or indoors during the fall season. It will also grow into the winter. This leafy green vegetable is perfect for salads or steamed stews, and would definitely make a satisfying addition to your fall garden.

Kale is famous for its flavor and taste; it also has a wide range of health benefits. It’s packed with nutrients including vitamin K, A, C. It’s also a cholesterol-lowering plant, that’s loaded with antioxidants and fiber.

3. Spinach

kale-825193_1280Spinach will thrive in late summer, about four weeks before your first fall frost date. You can sow seeds outdoors directly, and plants would come out and become fully grown in about 30 days. However, you do need to prepare your soil first.

You will need to loosen up your soil at least 10 inches deep and mix some organic fertilizers before sowing the seeds. Seeds have to be sown, two inches apart from each other, in rows that are at least 8 inches apart and half inch deep. They can also be grown indoors in containers.

Spinach is one of the healthiest superfoods that not only taste good, but also gives you a burst of nutrients, good enough to fight diseases and boost your immune system.

All these crops need regular care. Also,  prepare your beds and soil before planting your crops. Make sure you pick a spot that receives at least partial sunlight. Water your plants regularly and make sure they are not being infected with pests.
