Will global warming bring us to our demise? It’s possible. Scientists have been trying to find the answer to how our world will end, and global warming could be one of the possible ways how we will destroy ourselves.
Imaging this, the global temperature keeps on rising; the globe keeps on getting hotter and hotter, to the point where it becomes impossible to sustain life on earth. At the current rate of global warming and climate change, this is not unlikely to happen very soon. Temperature of the Earth’s surface has been warming up, and within a few years, it could become a more serious problem than what we currently realize.
Scientists have been trying to predict the future. They have always tried to find how our world will end, and what the fate of our earth is in the future, and they have found some shocking scenarios related to global warming and human induced climatic change. Scientists have studied the effects of global warming using projection models. They used all the variables and data available and analyzed them to come up with a projection of the future. It’s not easy to predict the future. As we all know the famous quote:
“Predictions are very difficult to make, especially about the future.” – Niels Bohr
However, scientists have been using computer simulations and models to make predictions related to our fate in the future. Scientists have been pretty accurate so far to say that global warming will one day destroy life on earth if the current trend continues.
Some of the findings through these projections and analysis are really shocking. It’s possible that the global warming will go beyond the tipping point, where the earth’s temperature will keep on rising rapidly, much faster than the current rate, if nothing is done within the next few years.
Impacts of Global Warming
Global warming is already having a significant effect on our daily lives, health, and communities. Below are some of the consequences of global warming.
Impacts of global warming are as follows:
-
Melting of arctic ice caps
-
Rapid sea level rise and increased coastal flooding
-
More frequent extreme climatic events
-
More damaging wildfires
-
More intense heat waves
-
Loss of vegetation and forests
-
Loss of wildlife and habitat
-
Rise in healthcare costs
-
Disruption of food supplies
-
More severe droughts
When will global warming destroy life on earth?
Scientists now believe destruction of life on earth through global warming can occur sooner than we think. Global warming can cause an extreme condition which scientists call “runaway greenhouse effect,” where the earth’s atmosphere traps so much greenhouse gases that it becomes life threatening.
In two recent studies, scientists have confirmed that global warming is one of the fundamental processes through which a planet can become uninhabitable. For example, Venus, our closest cousin, is believed to have had water in the past, but the oceans evaporated and disappeared because of the high concentration of carbon dioxide trapped in its atmosphere. For Venus, both carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere and its proximity from the sun combined caused a runaway greenhouse effect, making the oceans evaporate and disappear.
The more recent of the two studies, published on Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience revealed that that the amount of energy needed to shift a planet’s climate into thermal overdrive at Earth’s distance from the sun was about 10 percent less than the estimates many scientists have been using for more than two decades.
Colin Goldblatt, an assistant professor at the University of Victoria in British Columbia who studies the evolution of Earth’s climate, explains that runaway heating can occur when warming temperatures push enough water vapor into the air to slam the infrared window shut. It can happen easier than we think.
Though the study would seem to rule out any immanent runaway greenhouse effect on Earth, Goldblatt underscores the importance of reining in global warming.
“There is this thing known as a runaway greenhouse effect. It is easier than we thought to cause it. But it’s not something that’s likely to happen in the context of anthropogenic global change,” he says. “But the flip side of that is that we really do need to still worry about anthropogenic global change. It’s still a really big deal.” – Colin Goldblatt | When would global warming destroy life on Earth? Study hazards a guess. – CSMonitor.com
The study suggests that the “Goldilocks” zone or a comfortable habitable zone in a stellar system where a planet could stay warm from its sun to allow liquid water to remain in its stable form on surface may be narrower than previously estimated, and so, the chances of finding a habitable planet like ours is getting significantly slim.
Global warming and climate change is real and if we do nothing to change the way we are dumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, it could cause our own destruction. Please join us and help us to combat global warming. We could create a greener planet for all of us and also for the future generations.
