Let’s be real, paying high utility bill is never fun, especially in summer when your electricity bills could skyrocket. Lowering your utility bill doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your living standards or spend a lot of money on gadgets. Here is how you could cut your bills by just using common sense.

Saving on utility bills means using less energy and resources, plugging up wastage, and also saving the planet. A lot of fossil fuels are used to produce the energy you need to power your home. It all adds up and makes our environment even hotter. The more gadgets we use to keep us cool, the more fossil fuels we need to power them and it goes in a cycle of adding greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Over the years, technology has been improving and becoming more efficient in conserving energy. Latest gadgets and machinery are designed to consume less energy giving us more outputs. However, there are several hacks and tricks you could use to lower your energy bills even further. Below we will discuss some of the ways you could lower your utility bills, just by using some of the common sense techniques, without investing a lot of money on gadgets.

Turn off lights that you don’t need. Go around your house and check for lights that are not being used and can be turned off.  Ask your roommate, spouse, siblings, children, parents and friends to do the same.  To make your home more energy efficient, you could invest a little on LED bulbs and replace your old bulbs. They would pay for themselves in the long run since they use significantly less energy.

2. Unplug appliances when not in use

Some stuff like TV, stereo, computer, air conditioners, microwave ovens, and such can draw power even when they are turned off.

“A surprisingly large number of electrical products—TVs to microwave ovens to air conditioners—cannot be switched off completely without being unplugged. These products draw power 24 hours a day, often without the knowledge of the consumer. We call this power consumption “standby power.” – Standby Power

3. Use less air conditioning

Your air-conditioning is probably one of the highest power drawing gadgets you have at home. Try to use less air conditioning. Even turning it down a few notches would help reduce your bills. Try some of the alternative ways to stay cool this summer and use less air conditioning, and you will see the savings at the end of the month.

4. Keep your vents clean

A lot of energy can be wasted if your vents and ducts and not properly cleaned and services each year. Replace any faulty duct, repair any leaks or breaks in the pipes, insulate all cooling pipes and keep your house better circulated.

5. Insulate and seal your house

books-698422_1280Also try to look for leaks and breaks in insulation of your house, on your attic and around your windows and doors, which can cause air leaks. Insulate and seal all around your house for better heating and cooling efficiency.

So these are some simple tricks that you can follow, and it will significantly lower your utility bills, I guarantee it. Also, try to do all the heavy duty work, such as laundry, ironing, and dishwashing at off peak hours when the rates are lower.  For example, the rate for per unit of electricity at 9:00 AM is 5 times higher than the rate charged at 9:00 PM, so it makes a lot of sense to wait for the cheapest hours to do your heavy duty work.
